Size: 58 acres
Location: Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site is located along Old Montgomery Rd., 1.5 miles northwest of downtown Tuskegee, Alabama; 35 miles east of Montgomery and 20 miles west of Auburn.
Description: Booker T. Washington founded this college for black Americans in 1881. Preserved here are the brick buildings the students constructed themselves, Washington's home, and the George Washington Carver Museum, which serves as park headquarters and visitor center. The college is still an active institution that owns most of the property within the national historic site.
Activities: Visitors can enjoy exhibits, interpretive programs, and films at the George Washington Carver Museum. Ranger-guided programs are offered of the "Oaks" (home of Booker T. Washington) as well as the Historic Campus, which has been designated as a Historic District. The tour includes buildings that were built by Tuskegee Institute students and designed by Robert R. Taylor, the first African American graduate of MIT. Two-hour curriculum-based programs are offered for educational groups (advanced notice required).Operating Hours: The Park is open daily from 9am to 4:30pm and is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day.
